Event Code GOV 19/100
Event type Course
Event categories Governance
Event Summary The focus of our annual governor conference for 2019/20 is 'Governance under the new Ofsted Framework'. We are pleased to welcome Claire Collins, Head of Consultancy at the National Governance Association (NGA) to deliver our keynote presentation.
Event description
The focus of the key note speech will be 'The realities of school governance under the new Ofsted Framework'.

This presentation will explore the NGA's findings from its research on the role of governance in the new Ofsted framework;
  • looking directly at the experiences of governing boards nationally that have been subject to inspection under the new framework,
  • reflecting on both individual and collective experience and the latest from the ongoing dialogue between Ofsted, NGA and their members.
You will also attend 2 workshops during the day, selected from the following 4 options:

Workshop A - A Governor's role in supporting staff wellbeing
Touching on the national agenda for Mental Health in education, this one-hour workshop focuses on the effect of appropriate planning and strategies on implementing good practice in your educational setting. The session will provide an overview of mental health issues and is designed to help governors support pupil and staff wellbeing

Workshop B - Effective Governor monitoring
One of the three core functions of all governing bodies is to hold executive leaders to account. Ofsted will review how effectively governors are monitoring the school's improvement plans when making their judgement on leadership and management. This session will explore what governors should be monitoring, including practical solutions and examples of what effective governor monitoring looks like, different structures for monitoring improvement, and options for how governing bodies can be organised to ensure they meet their monitoring duties.

Workshop C - What Governors' need to know about the curriculum and the 'three i's'
This workshop will explore Ofsted's new 'quality of education' judgement and what it really means for a school and its curriculum. It will look into the 'three i's': intent, implementation and impact, and what the role of governance should look like within this structure. The session will identify areas where schools may be struggling with adapting to the new framework and how governors can be supporting with this.

Workshop D - Developing an effective parental engagement strategy
The new Ofsted Framework and the 2019 governance handbook both place a stronger emphasis on parental engagement; this is a significant change to the content of the previous governance handbook. This workshop will explore the key aspects of a strong parental engagement strategy that enables the board to effectively use the view of parents to inform strategic direction.

Other sessions during the day will be:

Ethical Leadership within Schools, delivered by Nina Kemp, Headteacher of Whitmore Primary in Basildon.

What's culture got to do with it? - School Improvement in a MAT, delivered by Dr Tesca Bennett, Executive Principal of Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy.

Learning outcomes
The conference is held in recognition of the important voluntary work undertaken by school governors.

To support this we are offering governors and clerks the opportunity to network with other governors and the chance to visit a variety of lunchtime 'marketplace' stands covering a range of services of interest to governors.
