Primary English: Teaching Writing – Improving Writing through the teaching of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary

Event Code CPD 20/320
Event type Course
Event categories N/A
Event Summary This course focuses on how the explicit and contextualised teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling can lead to improved outcomes in writing
Event description During this course we will consider how the effective use of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary will lead to improvements in the quality of pupils' writing. We will explore curriculum expectations in these areas and share a range of practical ideas for teaching. The focus will be on teaching these skills as part of the writing process rather than as separate elements.

Grammar - The National Curriculum states that: Explicit knowledge of grammar is, however, very important, as it gives us more conscious control and choice in our language. Building this knowledge is best achieved through a focus on grammar within the teaching of reading, writing and speaking.

We will look at ways in which we can give pupils conscious control over their writing in order to ensure they are able to write coherently and in a range of different styles.

Punctuation - the effective use of punctuation is a key skill and one which helps the reader to follow and, at times, interpret text as the writer intended. During the course we will explore some of the punctuation taught in the NC and how it can be used to improve writing.

Vocabulary - using words to convey specific meaning to the reader is an important element of writing. We will consider the importance of teaching vocabulary and encouraging pupils to be adventurous in their word choices.
