Event Summary Reading comprehension requires a combination of a range of different skills. This session explores the range of interconnected skills which readers need in order to fully comprehend the texts they are reading.
Event description Drawing on the National Curriculum and a range of research this course defines the interacting skills needed for reading comprehension to take place and suggests ways in which they can be developed within the classroom.

This includes the skills of:
  • Predicting
  • Using prior knowledge
  • Summarising
  • Inferring
  • Retrieving information
  • Evaluating

Participants will benefit most from this session if they have access to text they are intending to use with their pupils as, throughout the training, there are a number of tasks which will be most relevant if carried out using such a text.

  • gaining a greater understanding of reading comprehension and the range of skills involved
  • the opportunity to apply what they have been learning by relating it to texts they will be teaching from
  • receiving a range of practical ideas for teaching
