Event Summary | With the current emphasis on reading as an essential element of the catch-up curriculum this course will focus on the different skills needed in order for pupils to become fluent and confident readers who have a good understanding of what they are reading. |
||||||
Event description | Reading … feeds pupils' imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. National Curriculum Reading is a complex activity which involves a range of different skills including the ability to decode, understand, summarise, infer and predict. During the course we will consider how these skills can be taught within the classroom and how we can plan for progression across KS2. Time will also be devoted to exploring the importance of prior knowledge, vocabulary skills and developing fluency in reading. The session will highlight the importance of reading for pleasure and of reading a variety of texts to pupils. The Education Endowment Foundation highlight reading comprehension as an area which can help underachieving pupils close the gap between themselves and their peers. In response to the recent lockdown this course will support teachers in creating an effective catch-up curriculum for their pupils. Reference will also be made to the focus on reading in the Education Inspection Framework. |
